Gardens in Our Care
The Barrington Garden Club is responsible for maintaining and designing eight town gardens.
For over 60 years, The Barrington Garden Club has designed, maintained and financially supported eight highly visible gardens located throughout the center of town, most flanking the main route into town (County Road) and the town administrative buildings. The gardens have been designed and redesigned over decades and plant material is selected with conservation and the environment in mind. During the summer months, each active member of the club is assigned a garden and each garden group is responsible for providing the labor and talent that is required to keep the gardens looking well cared for and visually appealing.
A very special THANK YOU to the Barrington DPW. We couldn’t do it without you!

The Blue Star Marker and Garden is located in Police Cove Park. The development, management and support of this Garden is a collaboration between the Barrington Garden Club and the Hameho Garden Club. In the spring, the garden is graced with red and white tulips and blue pansies and by Memorial Day they are replaced with red and white begonias and blue lobelia. This garden is the newest of all the town gardens, and was created to support the National Garden Clubs efforts to honor the men and women of the United States Armed Forces.

The Booster Board Garden is located at the intersection of Rte. 114 and Federal Rd. directly across from the Barrington Congregational Church. This north facing garden flanks the sides and fills the space directly below the large booster board sign that announces school and community events. Because of its location, the garden presents many challenges including direct sun, strong winds and traffic pollution at a very busy intersection. The garden is planted with many hardy shrubs and perennials including Rose of Sharon, Endless Summer Hydrangeas, grasses and Russian Sage.

The Center Triangle Gardens are located at the intersection on the corner of County Road (Rt114) and Rumstick Road on the south end of town. This triangle shaped area consists of three gardens, separated by sidewalks and is filled with deciduous shrubs and herbaceous plants. Prominent shrubs and plants include a Butterfly Bush, Gold Spirea, Rozanne Geraniums, Nepeta, Chelone Oblique, Yellow Daylilies, Russian sage, Veronica, Sedum varieties, Montauk Daisies, Rose bushes, Lavender, Cone Flower and low growing junipers.
A small bench and memorial plaque were installed under a tree in 2019 to honor a former garden club member.

The Honor Roll Garden flanks the memorial to Barrington’s war veterans standing proudly on County Road in front of Town Hall. Its flowers, appropriately, are red, white and blue: hundreds of colorful bulbs in spring, then a succession of flowering shrubs and perennials. Perennials include roses, Annabelle hydrangea, baptisia, phlox, Shasta daisies, Lucifer crocosmia, Russian sage, nepeta, candytuft, Red Carpet sedum and caryopteris. Annuals including sun-tolerant impatiens, petunias and lobelia provide reliable color from Memorial Day until first frost.

The original library garden was established in 1964. Members of the garden club and Barrington Landscape architect, J. Carol Fulkerson designed the garden in front of the town library which, at the time, was located in the town administrative building. The Garden Club raised $4,000 to create and plant the garden. It was completed in 1967.
Today, the Library is located in the Peck building adjacent to the Administrative Building. A new garden was established in the name of Beatrice C. MacIntyre in the early 1990’s and was designed and now maintained by the club. The garden also includes a memorial plaque in memory of Barrington citizens killed in action during WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam and Grenada. In 2022 a granite stone was installed as part of the Rhode Island Slave History project.

The Memorial Stone Garden is located on the south side of Town Hall and shares that location with the Flagpole, Memorial Stone and wall of Memorial Plaques center stage. A large hosta bed graces the area under heavily shaded trees and flowering shrubs. Different varieties of red, white and blue annuals have been planted each year in front of the Wall. Directly across the brick patio is a large kidney shaped bed that will be replanted in spring of 2023 with drought tolerant perennial plants that will require less water in this quick draining and windy area. A row of white rose bushes anchor the center space with a lovely wooden bench provided nearby for reflective repose.

The Presidents garden is located on the southeast corner of the Town Hall administrative building property. The garden was established to honor the past presidents of the club in the 90’s. A section of the garden is full shade, while the front of the garden, facing the road, is planted with annuals and perennials in the spring and summer.
